Expect your copy to quickly get dog eared and maybe even stained with drool

There have been many books written about the Gibson Les Paul. With so many flavors and styles of Les Pauls and when researching this iconic guitar it can be sometimes confusing. Some of these books focus on certain types of Pauls like the Black Beauty or even focus on vintage years such as the heralded 1959 Burst. Tony Bacon has recently written “Sunburst – How the Les Paul Became a Standard”, not focusing on a vintage or style but actually a finish.

Tony Bacon follows the “Burst” from its inception through modern times. As you turn the pages of the book it becomes clear how a technology created in 1957 is still cutting edge in the hands of today’s guitarists. The book covers the influence of this guitar as it found its way into the hands of the greatest guitar players in history. The book also gives the history of particular Les Paul models that were passed from icon to icon gracing the most famous recordings and stages in rock history.

So what makes the “Burst” so special the Les Paul comes in an array of colors? Some will argue that Gibson reserves the best maple tops for their translucent finishes. Do those AAA tops make a sonic difference? I would say no but there are tone “cork sniffers” that would argue that point for days. What the “Burst” top does give you is attitude.

Full disclosure I am the owner of a 2011 Gibson Les Paul Traditional Iced Tea Burst. When banging out chords on it I can embody the swagger of Jimmy Page, the coolness of Peter Green or the sonic fury of Slash. When you are playing a “Burst” you feel connected to the guitar and connected to its history.

“Sunburst – How the Les Paul Became a Standard” takes you through that history. Carefully chronicling how this guitar has become considered as an artwork, lusted after, surrounded in myth and mystery. The book also has a great reference section that chronicles the history of the “Burst” and cross references features and functionality of all model years.

Gotta love 'bursts!

I've been a Strat player for most of my life, but I also own a couple of Pauls. I've always wanted a '60 LP, but the prices went from merely outrageous to astronomical. As a guitarist/amp-repair guy, I've loved the look of figured maple, and the flamed and/or quilted LPs are the combination of looks and sound that any guitarist could love. This volume covers the history of many famous players and their use of 'bursts, and the photographs are stunning. Bacon does a very good job.

Tony Bacon strikes again

I own a ton of books on the Gibson Les Paul, including Tony Bacon's. I had some concerns that maybe this book would be a re-hash of his other Les Paul book. But I was happy to find that Sunburst:How the Gibson Les Paul standard became a legend isn't a repackaging of his old book at all. It's filled with beautiful color pictures of this wonderful instrument. Most of which I've never seen before. And a lot of information that wasn't in his previous book. I highly recommend this book if you love the flametop Les Pauls.

About the Author
David C. Carson holds a Master of Arts in Religion and has worked for two international mission organizations. His articles, both religious and secular, have appeared in numerous periodicals. David presently lives with his wife of thirty-two years in central North Carolina where he researches, writes, and enjoys his grandchildren.

Ancient history comes alive!

I was surprised at how quickly I was drawn into the world of people I had known so little about. Historical novels are not generally considered to be "page-turners", but Maccabee qualifies. Like John Jakes has made American history personal for me, David Carson uses real historical personalities to tell the story of pre-Christian Jerusalum. This actually made it fun to learn about the deep roots of the Middle Eastern conflicts. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good story of an underdog battling gigantic odds.

Maccabee--a novel worthy of its subject matter

Having a good plot is the most important thing I want in a book, and this book has a great one. When I first began reading it, I didn't think I was going to enjoy it. The first couple of chapters set up the setting and historical context for the remainder of the book, so it's too technical in the beginning for me. Once the action begins (specifically, the chase scene through the temple), the plot is exciting and doesn't let up. This book would make a great movie. The author describes the action so well that as I was reading, I was imagining different camera angles as if it were a movie. I had never heard of any stories from this time period, so to read about events that really happened from a time with which I was unfamiliar was extremely interesting.

As with most things, this book is not without its faults. At times, it sacrifices the storyline and mood by interjecting historical details that come across as being too "textbook-ish". Hopefully, there will be a sequel and the historical facts can be better blended into the narrative. (For example, I would leave out the "they did this during this time" or "such and such a food was popular then" and simply have the characters doing what they did and eating what they did without the author pointing it out as being "historical"--the reader should assume this without the author having to blatantly explain the historical significance.)...Overall, though, this was an entertaining and enlightening novel that never lets up on the action.

Something for Everyone!

War,Romance,Good,Evil. This book has it all. I was skeptical at first because I usually don't read historical books. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I knew nothing about this period in history and found myself wanting to know more. Once I started reading I was unable to put it down. Especially during the chase scene in the temple! Very well done. One exclaimer though: Not for the faint of heart! Very vivid depictions of some of the cruelty of this time period. This read won't leave you disappointed and has something for everyone.

In defense of introversion (or how being an innie is cool)

This is hardly an impartial review. As somebody who has been called at some point or another the gamut of terms associated with introversion, from "shy" (which I don't object) to "anti-social" (which I most certainly consider unfair), I found in Susan Cain's "Quiet," the validation and appreciation many introverts have been searching for.

In "Quiet," Ms. Cain explains the rise of the Extrovert Ideal in the 1920s and how it is that today we associate talkative, risk-taking, and action-oriented people with intelligence, beauty, power and success. The Extrovert Ideal is so pervasive that influences our work performance, educational policies, political choices, and even the country's financial health. But the focus of "Quiet" is on exposing the myths and misunderstandings that were born when we as a culture embraced the Extrovert Ideal and turned introversion into a malady to be avoided.

To dispel the misconception that introversion is some kind of sickness or "weirdness", Ms. Cain traces both the biological and cultural basis for introversion and extroversion and their role as evolutionary survival strategies in animals and humans. She interviews scientists who have conducted hundreds of studies to test different theories in an effort to determine how much of our temperament is a result of genetics and/or of our free will.

The best part of "Quiet" is that the insights gleaned from these studies can help introverts take advantage of their special traits and thrive on their own terms in an extroverted world. Since introversion and extroversion are preferences for a certain level of outside stimulation, Ms. Cain advises introverts to find their "sweet spot" --or what scientists call the optimal level of arousal. Scientists also notice that introverts engage in "deliberate practice" or working alone so for those looking for a job, Ms. Cain encourages them to pay attention to the layout of working spaces to determine how much interruption they may have to deal with at work. For those still deciding on a career, the author reminds readers that research shows that introverts are not reward-seeking like extroverts, but rather motivated by the enjoyment they find in pursuing an activity; in other words, by being in what psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls the "flow". Ms. Cain offers encouragement to introverts to venture in the extrovert world because we all have the ability to stretch our limits but the optimal way for introverts to do it is in the service of their "core projects," the things they are passionate about. And for those with children, the author dedicates an entire chapter for helping introvert children become confident and comfortable in extroverted environments and situations.

Amid the research and the advice, Ms. Cain calls the readers' attention to those introverts who have made a difference in the world like Rosa Parks and Ghandi. They showed that empathy, thoughtfulness, persistence, compassion, focus and conscientiousness, all characteristics ascribed to introversion, are leadership attributes too.

"Quiet" has not only given me a better understanding of introversion but also of the opposite trait. The same person, who labeled me as "anti-social" also boasted on how easily he could befriend people and in the same breath, complained about how my quietness and solitary pursuits would be hell for him. After reading Ms. Cain's book, now I realize why somebody who can make 100 friends would be so bothered by the one solitude-seeking friend in the group and why introverts and extroverts attract each other. And so, I think, introverts and extroverts will both benefit from reading "Quiet". But for those of us, innies who find joy in doing our own thing, prefer a book than join a party or think monastic silence is bliss, there is no longer any need to feel guilty or like we are oddballs because of our preferences. The message from "Quiet" is clear. Introversion has never been an aberration but a variant of the norm.

The Injustice of Personality Prejudice

First, look at this list from pg 5 in the introduction to this book:

Of course, that is only a tiny list of the accomplishments of introverts, and she forgot to put the Theory of Evolution in that list. Let's face it. One cannot expect people handicapped with extroversion to be able to think deeply or meditate over the serious philosophical, scientific, or supremely artistic subjects which move the deeper among us.

Okay, maybe extroversion is not a handicap, but it is important to realize that introversion is no more a handicap than extroversion. So, the extroverts deserve a retaliatory jab once in a while for treating introverts as though we are mentally and socially challenged.

This book by Susan Cain is the ultimate jab, though she is sometimes overnice toward the ones that have promoted "The Extrovert Ideal" for more than a century in the U.S. I do not believe I have read any better work dealing with the issue of personality than "Quiet."

There are some scientific points to be made in the book, with mention of studies that show how introversion or extroversion are biologically, genetically ingrained in us, though some of the studies (particularly the one mentioning literal "thin skin") strike me as somewhat irrelevant if not pseudoscientific. Some of the best information has to do with twin studies, particularly notable for showing the error of "blank slate" theory. See also The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature by Steven Pinker. I am a little puzzled there was no mention of Pinker in this book, even in the footnotes.

I am tempted to go through all of the subjects covered in this book and give a summary, but better than that is the list of thoughts from Susan Cain's blog, which will give an idea of the thrust of the book:

1. There's a word for "people who are in their heads too much": thinkers.

2. Our culture rightly admires risk-takers, but we need our "heed-takers" more than ever.

3. Solitude is a catalyst for innovation.

4. Texting is popular because in an overly extroverted society, everyone craves asynchronyous, non-F2F communication.

5. We teach kids in group classrooms not because this is the best way to learn but because it's cost-efficient, and what else would we do with the children while all the grown-ups are at work? If your child prefers to work autonomously and socialize one-on-one, there's nothing wrong with her; she just happens not to fit the model.

6. The next generation of quiet kids can and should be raised to know their own strength.

7. Sometimes it helps to be a pretend-extrovert. There's always time to be quiet later.

8. But in the long run, staying true to your temperament is the key to finding work you love and work that matters.

9. Everyone shines, given the right lighting. For some, it's a Broadway spotlight, for others, a lamplit desk.

10. Rule of thumb for networking events: one genuine new relationship is worth a fistful of business cards.

11. It's OK to cross the street to avoid making small talk.

12. "Quiet leadership" is not an oxymoron.

13. The universal longing for heaven is not about immortality so much as the wish for a world in which everyone is always kind.

14. If the task of the first half of life is to put yourself out there, the task of the second half is to make sense of where you've been.

15. Love is essential, gregariousness is optional.

16."In a gentle way, you can shake the world." - Gandhi

The last thing I would like to convey is that I am happy I read this book, because being an introvert all of one's life can be difficult in modern U.S. culture. Being treated as a freak because of the personality characteristics introversion entails is unfortunate. Extroverts have it good right now, and frequently get the best rewards, even when an introvert is the one that deserves those rewards, value being placed on personality rather than merit, but it helps introverts to know we have superior characteristics, and should not regret them.

Fantastic Book on Important Topic

I loved this book! It's all about introverts in a culture that celebrates extroversion. We have a personality worshiping culture and the new social media has only made it worse. Everyone on Facebook is a performer. Despite 1/3 to 1/2 of the population being introverts, everything in our culture from parenting to school to work to socializing celebrates and rewards extroversion. Some of the most creative and brilliant creators and thinkers in history were introverts. The theme of this work is that introverts have a great deal to offer the world and that we are making a mistake by not accommodating and encouraging this important personality type.

This is a compelling and very well-written book. I hope it will do very well. The author is raising very important points and has done so in a well researched and thoughtful work. I highly recommend this book and don't think you will be disappointed. Two very big thumbs up!

About the Author
Kathleen Park Talaro is a microbiologist, educator, author, and artist. She has been nurturing her love of microbiology since her youth growing up on an Idaho farm where she was first fascinated by tiny creatures she could just barely see swimming in a pond. This interest in the microbial world led to a biology major at Idaho State University, where she worked as a teaching assistant and scientific illustrator for one of her professors. This was the beginning of an avocation that she continues today that of lending her artistic hand to interpretation of scientific concepts. She continued her education at Arizona State University, Occidental College, California Institute of Technology, and California State University. She has taught microbiology and major s biology courses at Pasadena City College for 30 years, during which time she developed new curricula and refined laboratory experiments. She has been an author of, and contributor to, several publications of the William C. Brown Company and McGraw-Hill Publishers since the early 1980s, first illustrating and writing for laboratory manuals and later developing this textbook. She has also served as a coauthor with Kelly Cowan on the first two editions of Microbiology: A Systems Approach. Kathy continues to make microbiology a major focus of her life and is passionate about conveying the significance and practical knowledge of the subject to students, colleagues, family, friends, and practically anyone who shows interest. In addition to her writing and illustration, she keeps current attending conferences and participating in the American Society for Microbiology and its undergraduate educational programs. She is gratified by the many supportive notes and letters she has received over the years from devotees of microbiology and users of her book. She lives in Altadena, California, with husband Dave Bedrosian, and son David. Whenever she can, she visits her family in Idaho. In her spare time, she enjoys photography, reading true crime books, music, crossword puzzles, and playing with her rescued kitties.

Barry Chess has been teaching microbiology at Pasadena City College for over 15 years. He received his Bachelor s and Master s degrees from California State University, Los Angeles, and did several years of postgraduate work at the University of California, Irvine, where his research focused on the expression of eukaryotic genes involved in the development of muscle and bone. At Pasadena City College, Barry developed a new course in human genetics and helped to institute a biotechnology program. He regularly teaches courses in microbiology, general biology, and genetics, and works with students completing independent research projects in biology and microbiology. Over the past several years, Barry s interests have begun to focus on innovative methods of teaching that lead to greater student understanding. He has written cases for the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science and presented talks at national meetings on the use of case studies in the classroom. In 2009, his laboratory manual, Laboratory Applications in Microbiology: A Case Study Approach, was published. He is thrilled and feels very fortunate to be collaborating with Kathy Talaro, with whom he has worked in the classroom for more than a decade, on this ninth edition. Barry is a member of the American Society for Microbiology and regularly attends meetings in his fields of interest, both to keep current of changes in the discipline and to exchange teaching and learning strategies with others in the field.

Dumb, but it's working for my class

Yeah, I bought the damn "International version" without realizing. Dumb, but it's working for my class. Great condition of book just like it stated. Next time I'll read the fine print and not just the price tag.

A very good textbook on microbiology

My professor chose this textbook for my microbiology course and it was a great choice. This textbook offers a ton of colorful, informative charts and pictures, which make learning this difficult subject more fun and much easier. The majority of the topics were very well explained and made this course fun. I would highly recommend this textbook to any microbiology professor looking for a textbook for their class!

Excellent, and well written. If you have to take college level microbiology this is the book for you. It is a lot cheaper than the school bookstore, and the quality is fantastic. I ordered this book one week before the class, and it arrived on time.
