About the Author

A former student of the École Normale Supérieure, Yvette Kosmann-Schwarzbach holds a Doctorat d’État in mathematics as well as a degree in physics from the University of Paris. She has been a professor of mathematics at the University of Lille, at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, and most recently at the École Polytechnique (France). She has organized numerous conferences, and has held visiting positions and lectured on four continents.

The author of the forthcoming historical study, The Noether Theorems. Invariance and Conservation Laws in the Twentieth Century (Sources and Studies in the History of Mathematics and Physical Sciences), she has published some 70 research articles in differential geometry, algebra and mathematical physics, and has also co-edited The Verdier Memorial Conference on Integrable Systems (Progress in Mathematics), Integrability of Nonlinear Systems (Lecture Notes in Physics) and Discrete Integrable Systems (Lecture Notes in Physics).

Wanna know what's behind the standard model? What a quark is, mathematically speaking? Then look no further but

be forewarned that this very concise book is not an easy read, except for someone with a very solid background in abstract and advanced linear algebra. It deserves 5 stars for the lucidity of the mathematical presentation, but I deducted 1 star as a heads up because despite its claim to be aimed at advanced undergraduates / beginning graduates in math *or* physics, I think the book would be tough going for many readers who fit that description. As a math-degree-less autodidact, I found the book very challenging in places. To be fair, I found Chapter 2, Representations of Finite Groups, the most difficult chapter, and this no doubt colored my perception of the book as a whole. So if you can power through that chapter, you might well find the rest fairly smooth sailing.

One major plus is that there are a large number of problems and complete solutions (pp 129 - 183).

For me, the most outstanding feature -- and the reason I read the book - is that it explains in very clear, mathematically rigorous terms the basic group-theoretic math behind the standard model of elementary particle physics. If you make it through to the end, then you'll come to understand in a mere 100 pages, what, mathematically speaking, the Eightfold Way and quarks really are! This is quite an accomplishment. I have not found any other introductory book that does this except Frankel's The Geometry of Physics: An Introduction, Second Edition, which, although a superb book for self-study, is a very long read. There are also a number of well-written books aimed at physicists like Sternberg's Group Theory and Physics or Ramond's Group Theory: A Physicist's Survey that deal with the topic in some detail and are well worth studying, but no introductory book on the standard model I've consulted, e.g., Griffiths' Introduction to Elementary Particles, even attempts to address the issue. (If you know of one that does, please leave me a comment informing me.)

In sum, this is a very clear but ultra-concise exposition of the essential mathematics needed to understand mathematically what those diagrams of representations of groups you see in physics books on the standard model really mean. But if you're not 100% comfortable with very condensed mathematical presentations, this book is probably not the right first book.

The Divine Prescence

The divine feminine, it is contained albeit on a quiet level in all three of the major monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, although they are male dominated. In the kabbalistic works of Jewish mysticism this is commonly known as the Shekina, or the divine presence. In gnostic Christianity it is known as Sophia, considered the Goddess of Wisdom. In Islam the Shekina is called Sakina.

THe book traces the very beginning of the feminine divine from the early pagan goddesses of the Middle East all the way to the development of Sophia the Wisdom Goddess. The Hebrew God had a wife. Jewish theology developed from strains of influence stemming from surrounding cultures like the Egyptians, Sumerians and Canaanites. In the Canaanite Pantheon, El , the head Canaanite God had a wife Ashera. In the Hebrew bible God's wife was also called , Ashera.

Ashera would later give way to the Wisdom Goddess. The wisdom Goddess drew from such influences as Isis, Inanna, Maat and Ashera. They were Goddesses who taught mankind wisdom. The Wisdom Goddess would later transform into the Shekhina. The Shekhina drew primarily from the Near Eastern Wisdom Goddess. Many symbol associated with the Shekina were the dove, light, Trees, incense smoke and the burning bush. The Shekina is mentioned several times in Kabbalistic literature. By the way the authors make excellent references to the Kabbalistic literature and Near Eastern Sources.

An examinatination of Jewish sources show that there are two Shekinas, an earthly and a heavenly one. The heavenly Shekina is wrapped around the male counterpart like a blanket of fire. The Earthly Shekina hovers in the earth and is the planets soul. It is the earhtly Shekina that is in exile with the Israelites.

Sophia, the Christian divine prescence drew heavily from Greek, Jewish and other Christian souces in her creation. There was a concept of Gaia ingreek theology that was likened to the soul of the world. The Sophia was often equated with the Holy Spirit, The Virgin Mary and sometimes even Jesus himself.

The divine feminine is considered the mother of angels and planetary forces. The Shekina's role in creation is amply explained in the final part of the book. This final part gives an excellent over view on Kabbalitic mytholgy. This is the first book I have read by Soritia d'Este and David Rankine and I must tell you that I am thoroughly blown away by this book. It is excellent and understandable. I defeinitely plan on reading mkre book by this team of scholars.

The book has excellent sources in their bibliography for further research.. Everything is well documented. They make comparison to other Goddesses and give great background and periphery information. This book get five stars out of five stars.

Shekinah

This is a must get title along with Sophia, godess of wisdom, Bride of Christ, On the Wings of Shekhnah. As a historian, one presumes we have no idea what the Shekinah glory as found in the Bible is. This show the lack of understanding of the modern man of the cloth when it comes to how the early church taught, what the early Jews believed. These three books shows a plethora, indeed a goldmine of information on this subject. It is modern mans lack of knowledge and personal bias that makes this topic hard to understand. I recommend you grab these three title and go back to how the early church and early Jews viewed this all important topic.

Beautifully written and well researched

Beautiful book, very well written. The only thing I missed was illustrations, when reading it I just googled for pictures of the statues and monuments mentioned in the book and I hope the writers will include them in their next print/issue. A book definitely worth reading! The vast knowledge of the authors of the material they discuss is brought in easy manner - but while reading you will not only get an understanding of the evolution of Sophia, but some interesting insights in kabalistic thinking as well.

About the Author
Michael Misja, PhD, BCPCC, is a Christian psychologist and cofounder of North Coast Family Foundation in Cleveland and Akron, Ohio. He has counseled, taught, and spoken on Christian counseling for more than twenty years. In addition to the daily call show he hosted for six years, Michael developed and taught a program in Christian counseling for Moody Extension School for ten years. He has also served as cofounder and clinical director for inpatient and outpatient Christian counseling centers. He and his wife, Lin, found God and were married in New York City, where they were active in the arts and in ministry. They have been married twenty-seven years and have four children.

Charles F. Misja, PhD, is a licensed psychologist and cofounder of North Coast Family Foundation in Cleveland and Akron, Ohio. He has hosted a Christian call-in talk show on several radio stations and has taught at the college and seminary level. Chuck maintains a clinical practice and has been involved with missions work in Brazil for many years. He and his wife, Jackie, are high school sweethearts and have been married thirty-seven years. They have three grown children and six grandchildren. Chuck enjoys running marathons, downhill skiing, and fishing with his grandchildren.

A Must read if you have a difficult marriage !!!!!

Michael and Chuck Misja make it very simple to understand how marriages become "difficult" and how one can "thrive despite". I have been to numerous counceling sessions (alone..."since I'm the one with the 'problem'...") and have not received this indepth understanding nor practical ways to restore my dignity and learn to live again. I have a long way to go but feel hope for the first time after reading this book.

When you've tried everything else....

I am half way though this book, it has validated everything I have been feeling for the last 15 years in a difficult marriage. It's what you need to read when you've tried everything else and it's not a matter of just learning to communicate better, or learning to speak his love language, or making yourself love and respect,regardless....it's the book to read when despite everything you've tried, you still have a difficult marriage and you're tired of just surviving or existing. It's about thriving as a whole person and loving YOUR life with God.

Great book; needs more "thriving" examples

As stated by the other reviewers, this is a very good book. As the Misja's descibe the reasons for marital problems, they provide short stories about couples to illustrate the marital problems (names changed, of course). That gave them a lot of credibility in my eyes, as I read accounts of real-world behavior and emotions that I could relate to ("yup, done that", "sounds like me/us", etc.). They then proceed into their ideas for thriving despite the difficult marriage.

However, the "thriving" part of the book is seriously underweighted compared to the problem descriptions. The numerous short stories about marital problems needs to be balanced with just-as-numerous short stories about how people thrive despite their difficult marriage. There was only one short story about thriving that is comparable to the short stories about marital problems: the story of Patty thriving in "Patty and Dave" on page 212 (it is a 214 page book). This gave me an idea what thriving would look like in real life for Patty. The book needs more of these! Ideally one-for-one with the couples with marital problems earlier in the book. I need help putting skin on the Misja's ideas for how to thrive. I need to see what thriving would look like in a real life.

If you are looking for a good description of difficult marriages, and ideas for thriving despite a difficult marriage, this book is worth the read.

I hope the Misja's write a revised version that adds more thriving stories. I think that would add immensely to the usefulness of the book by helping people (like me) visualize what thriving looks in real life.

This essay brings together Jung's fully evolved thoughts on the analysis of dreams and the healing of the rift between consciousness and the unconscious, ideas that are central to his system of psychology.

Jung on the Philosophy of History

This 1957 essay is Jung's major statement on the "Big Picture". In Jung's view, the person who does not know him or herself, who does not understand his or her strengths as an individual, will necessarily fall victim to mass-mentality. Mass-mentality is the Unconscious played out on the global scale, and if left to its own devices, it will continue to produce tragedies similar in scale to what the human race experienced in the two world wars. The antidote, Jung argues, is self-knowledge. This is not philosophical self-knowledge, but rather psychological self-knowledge - a reckoning with one's animal instincts, one's shadow, one's dreams and fantasies. Ultimately, Jung says self-knowledge must involve a spiritual experience - an experience of tradition religious truths as relevant in one's own life. Only this kind of experience will protect a person from the trap of mass-mentality; moreover, the development of culture and perhaps even the survival of the race depend on such individuals who can resist mass-mentality when it is strongest. For Jung, the hope of the human race and the world at large depended ultimately on the inner work individuals do in their most intimate inner world. For Jung, the personal is the political, but in a much more profound way than that in which anyone else has ever used that phrase.

_In this book Jung correctly predicted that Communism had to collapse from within. No one else saw that coming. Why should they? For, as he points out, the mass state had all the force of the big battalions on their side- politics, science, and technology were their natural allies. And yet they collapsed.

_Should we rejoice in this? Why? Jung points out that the West is every bit as materialistic as our former Communist opponents. Our spiritual base is gone- in the place of true religion we have aging cults that serve the status quo. There is no inner power there. Every place Jung uses the term Communist, you can substitute Corporate and you have the same animal. That is because both are hierarchical structures where the individual counts for nothing. Indeed, the self-knowledge or individualization that would produce true men and women capable of standing up to the hierarchy is actively discouraged. They are trapped in the illusion of statistical man and of the organization- neither of which really exist. Only a few at the top can exercise the power of a true individual, and even they are usually no more than mouthpieces for the undeveloped masses and their unconscious drives.

_The hope for Jung lies in true religion. The freedom and autonomy of the individual depends on deep inner experience of a metaphysical nature. This is not "faith"; it is direct knowing. Even the deepest faith may melt away with time and circumstances- but not direct experience. It is only this that gives the individual the power to stand up to mass tyranny- and to the World itself. When you haven't made this breakthrough (which requires deep introspection, effort, and, yes, suffering) then other things get deified and charged with demonic energy- money, work, political influence...

_The shallow, rootless mass-man and his organizations are always going to lose, eventually, to the man with deep religious connection to the Macrocosm. Jung the Gnostic, Jung the Christian, Jung the Alchemist, Jung the Magician saw this. The individuated man has the cosmic correspondence within himself.

BEST INTRO TO JUNG

The only book by Carl Jung that I could read (as opposed to study), and easily understand and appreciate. Although written at the time of the cold war, his thoughts on the individual, religion and the state are as relevant today and truly timeless. I recommend The Undiscovered Self as the best introduction to one of the greatest psychologists and philosophers of the 20th century.
