As I transitioned from the military into Corporate America I almost immediately realized although the military prepared me for many facets of leadership and life it didn't prepare me for the complex world of business communication.
It was 4 pm, on very my first day in Corporate America as I attended a meeting. For the first 10 minutes our manager was leading the meeting and anything seemed normal but within minutes the dynamics quickly changed. Junior members were talking over more senior members. Respect for one another seemed to be at a minimum throughout the meeting as team member focused on trying to persuade each other on different aspects of the meeting. At 5:30 pm the door opened and everyone seems to be friends again.In my professional career I'd never seen anything like that before. As I later analyzed the situation I realized while I was in the military, communication was always kept at a minimum. You're either giving orders or taking orders but there isn't a discussion about them. It was that experience that drove me to study, develop, test, and implement practical communication tools I could easily use in any business environment and is the basis behind this book.The tools and techniques in this book helped me get promoted twice in a year at a Fortune 500 Company, accepted into a 3 year Leadership Development Program, and I was even able to talk a manager into creating my dream job during an interview when the position didn't exist at the time.Business communication skills are critical to your success. The first of these occurred on October 15, 1973 when the Yom Kippur War began with an attack by Syria and Egypt on Israel. The United States and many western countries supported Israel. Because of the western support of Israel, several Arab oil exporting nations imposed an oil embargo on the west. These nations withheld five million barrels of oil per day. Other countries made up about one million barrels of oil per day but the net loss of four million barrels of oil production per day extended through March of 1974. This represented 7% of the free world’s (i. e. , excluding the USSR) oil production. In 1972 the price of crude oil was about $3. 00 per barrel and by the end of 1974 the price of oil had risen by a factor of 4 to over $12. 00. This resulted in one of the worst recessions in the post World War II era. As a result, there was a movement in the United States to become energy independent. At that time the United States imported about one third of its oil (about five million barrels per day). After the embargo was lifted, the world chose to ignore the “wake-up call” and went on with business as usual.

This is a comprehensive book that addresses renewable, non-renewable, and future energy sources and their utilization. All current and potential future energy sources are discussed in great details including the type of energy, methods of converting the energy to useful forms, the engineering design issues associated with the energy conversion system, the efficiency of the conversion process, the economics of the conversion system, the risks associated with its use, the environmental impact and how it can be applied to meet the energy needs of the world. Current and future energy policy is discussed.

At the end of most of the chapters there are problems to assist instructors. Also, there are a number of worked out problems for the students within the text.

This is the first of a three volume series. In Volume 1, Fundamentals and Nonrenewable Sources, the focus is on the basic tools required to understand the complex interactions of energy and society (economy, population, finance, etc.), fundamentals (thermodynamics, heat transfer, etc.). It provides a general overview of various topics including the interrelationship between energy, economy, gross domestic product, and population. A review of engineering economics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer mechanisms is included. Volume 1 also covers nonrenewable energy resources (coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear); how to calculate the total reserve quantities of coal, petroleum and uranium, and how long these resources will last at various levels of consumption. Various technologies for converting these resources to produce electricity and other forms of energy are treated.

The second volume, Renewable and Other Potential Sources, discusses wind, solar, hydropower, geothermal, ocean, biomass, ethanol, fusion, space based power systems, hydrogen, advanced systems and fuel cells.

The third volume, Environmental Effects, Remediation, and Policies, looks at the impact of energy on the environment (e.g., acid rain, ozone depletion, global warming, emissions, pollution, etc.), green technologies (e.g., conservation, hybrid cars, electric vehicles, hydrogen economy, distribution systems etc.), policies (e.g., deregulation) and future trends.

3.5 Stars - decent introduction as long as other texts are consulted as well.

"A History of American Higher Education" is a nice introduction into the topic of college history. However, it is most definately not definitive. Any reader would benefit from consulting other texts (which I will list at the end of this review). The book does focus heavily on the ivy league schools; but, for good reason because much of the early developing history of higher education happens at these schools (since they were the first schools).

This was one of the texts for a class I took and over the course of the course we (as a class) had some questions and were confused about some parts of the book so we emailed Thelin and he promptly answered our questions.

If you are interested in the history of higher education then I recommend the following texts to be read in conjunction with each other because none of the following are stand-alone and definitive texts in the subject matter.

"American College and University: A History" by Frederick Rudolph
"American Higher Education" by Christopher Lucas
"Campus Life: Undergraduate Cultures from the End of the Eighteenth Century to the Present" by Helen Lefkowitz Horowitz

And, for a well-researched look into the history of admissions at three ivy league schools (Harvard, Yale, and Princeton) I recommend "The Chosen" by Jerome Karabel.

Finally, if you are interested in the history of co-operative living I highly recommend the following historical account about the University of Kansas: "Making Do and Getting Through" by Fred McElhenie (it is locally published for the University of Kansas by Oread Books).

Author presents a rather shameful account of higher education in ...

Author presents a rather shameful account of higher education in the 21st century. He claims there is no academic poverty because universities are rich. Author describes deterioration in professors' status as 'whining.' The word 'adjunct' does not appear in the index. Perhaps part of this is due to the fact that the book was written before the 2008 economic collapse.

okay history

The book adds a few interesting and new insights to the history of higher education canon. Despite the author's status as a full-time professor, the writing style is clear and concise. Also, the author should receive praise for making history relevant in contemporary policy debates and disspelling several myths about the history of higher education.

On the other hand, this book mainly covers the history of ivy league institutions and the 30 or so national selective public and private universities. Maybe the quest for a comprehensive history of higher education -- one that truly covers all colleges and all students -- is elusive and perhaps impossible, but I remain hopeful someone will someday pull it off.

Bottom line: a pretty decent introduction to the history of higher education.
