Read and write Devanagari.

A very thorough book for learning to write Devanagari. Lots of examples of "real" script from signs and handwriting. I like that it doesn't have large empty spaces for me to practice writing on. I'm not paying for empty pages with lines, I can practice writing in a notebook. Great coverage of the conjunct letters. I chuckled when the author wrote that Devanagari was an easy alphabet, yet here he wrote a whole book to learn to read and write it! It's not super hard, but it has complexities.

The automobile has undergone a continuous evolution since its introduction in the late 1800s. Today's vehicles still incorporate most of the major features of the very early vehicles, yet are vastly different in many aspects. Numerous comfort features, such as heating, air conditioning, and ventilation (HVAC) systems, have- been added to make driving safer and more enjoyable. Durability and longevity have increased continuously, although vehicles still break and wear out. Drivability and fuel mileage are slowly but steadily improving, while exhaust emissions are steadily decreasing.

The HVAC system is becoming one of the more durable areas of a vehicle while also becoming very complex with electronic controls, such as dual- and three-zone temperature controls. Also, the lingering effects of environmental regulations for chlorofluorocaxbon (CFC) and in the near future hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) reduction are causing refinements in HVAC system service procedures. These changes are affecting millions of older vehicles that are still on the road. As the automobile becomes more sophisticated and complex, more sophisticated technicians with better training are required to keep up with the changes in regulations, to determine the causes of any malfunction, and to repair problems.

Automotive Heating and Air Conditioning, Third Edition, was written to help the student understand the HVAC system used in cars, sport utility vehicles, pickups, light trucks, and vans. It describes the theory of operation for the major power transfer and control systems, as well as the methods to diagnose and repair common problems. The text covers traditional and modern HVAC systems and engine cooling systems. This edition has been expanded to include new regulations and service methods. It is arranged so that the major components of these systems are described completely with regard to theory of basic operation and methods used to diagnose, adjust, and repair problems.

The theory chapters (1 through 8 and 15) provide the student technician with an understanding of how the various systems work, the terminology used, and the variety of systems that can be encountered. For example, there are three major ways of transmitting motion and force from the HVAC control head to the airflow control doors. Modern HVAC systems use electronics for the same purpose that earlier systems used mechanical cables. Even though these newer systems are based on principles of the past, the modern technician needs to keep abreast of the technical advancements as vehicles evolve. If he or she understands how the systems operate, successful problem diagnosis and repair become much easier.

The service and repair chapters (Chapters 9 through 14 and 16) complete the coverage of each system by describing the procedure used to maintain a system for proper operation; diagnosing the cause of a problem if it does occur; and then repairing or adjusting the unit to correct the root cause of the problem. These topics are covered in a very generic fashion, to apply to as many makes and types of vehicles as possible. Service information in a printed or electronic form is commonly used in automotive repair industry. It takes more than just the ability to read for the student-technician to understand and use this information effectively. This author intends not to replace these manuals, but rather to supplement them so the student-technician can gain full benefit from these valuable sources of information. This book describes how to perform service operations, and the service information tells what operations are necessary for a particular service operation.

The service chapters have been made more realistic by the addition of Service Tips, which describe procedures that can bring a job to completion faster or ensure a more thorough repair. Real World Fixes have also been added; these are case studies of how technicians have solved and repaired problems.

This book covers all the areas contained in the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) test for Automotive Heating and Air Conditioning, and the ASE Task List for this area is included as Appendix A. With class instruction and shop experience, the student-technician should have no trouble passing this test.

Great ASE Study Guide

I am a certified mechanic studying for the ASE air conditioning tests S7 and A7 and have found this book to be full of good information. I have read through some of the Motor AgeA7 Heating & A/C: The Motor Age Training Self-Study Guide for ASE Certification study guides and have found them to be severely lacking in detail. This book gives a complete overview of a/c systems and would be a great addition to your library.

This book is informative, but awful

So there is plenty of great information in this book, and I learned a ton from reading it. I like the tech tips and very detailed facts. However this does not make up for how awfully this book is organized. Either someone was paid by the page, or the publisher decided it would be fun to shuffle around everything. Is there a reason why A/C Compressor styles are spread across two chapters, or could they have just gotten their own? Why is Cabin Filter removal arbitrarily stuffed in the middle of the Heating Fixes Chapter? Why must it cycle btween A/C to Heat every chapter, doesn't it make more sense to separate them entirely? I'm usually a very attentive reader, but I keep drifting when the subject matter is all over the place. Fix the structure of this book and it will be great, otherwise, buy a different one.

If you are an automotive HVAC tech, this book has a lot of reference and reminder information. If you are just beginning to get into this field then this book has a lot of basic and advanced information with good illustration, real work problems and fixes and quizzes and problem solving exercises as well. The included CD was useful as well with its power point slide shows on the different sections in the book,but the flash video files were a real pain to get to play(hince the 4star rating).

Great Guide to Prolog

Though I have just started this book, I can tell that it is going to be amazing. I have been trying to find a good introduction to Prolog for some time now, and this is exactly what I had been looking for. Clear presentation, beautiful and complete editing work, easy to understand, and comprehensive.

If you do want to use this book for A.I. though, and you either already understand Prolog or would rather work in lisp/python/etc. this book may be a bit much for you, either in terms of redundancy or over-saturation. However, if you can manage to slug through it (it is rather huge at 678 pgs), I think that anyone interested in A.I. or Prolog could find something helpful in this book.

Overall, I am excited to work through this book, and I will probably update my review once I have done so.

Updated version of my college textbook

For a review of both Prolog and AI-based algorithms, this is the book to read! I learend Prolog AND AI from this in one semester, and it was my very last class bfore graduation. WE used Turbo Prolog and if you can find a copy, I'd recommend it.

I've read reviews of this book that state Dr. BRatko is talking to peers or himself. I can't udnerstand it., The text was perfectly udnerstandable to me. And re-reading it, it still is. I plan to use the AI half of the book when writing my master's thesis next year.

An excellent book for learning prolog and AI

Having just read a book on automated reasoning which covered topics in logic, such as unification and resolution, I was very pleased with the prolog programming language, in that it takes concepts from logic, and uses them in ways that can be applied to a number of interesting areas of AI, such as NLP, planning, and expert systems. I thought Bratko succeeded in making this connection with logic, without burdening the reader with notation and concepts that are really not needed for writing or understanding prolog programs.
The book also worked for me on the level of providing a good introduction to the syntax and sematics of the language. The first 200 pages succeed to this end.
Finally, the last 13 chapters can be summarized as representing an introduction to AI from a prolog perspective. On the positive side, he shows how to apply prolog to all of the modern, main streams of AI study. However, on the negative, the slant towards prolog in these chapters tends to oversimplify these disciplines.
My impression of the language is that it seems good as a prototying language, since it is declarative in nature, but from my experimentation (using SWI Prolog) I think I could write better implementations using c or java.
In closing, Bratko's book represents a very good place to start learning prolog and the world of AI.

This book is something that will touch your heart, and your lives forever. In reading this book I instantly felt as though this was MY FAMILY,that was involved. I woke up worrying about each and every individual involved in this book. It is written in so much detail, and in such depth, that you can feel the heartbreak, the pain,the stress, the victories, the downfalls,and every other emotion that is expressed in this book. Absolutely OUTSTANDING!!!!!

I did not know what to expect when i saw the photo of the car on the cover. I was not prepared for the raw pain this remarkable family went through, nor the honesty of their sharing with the reader,
It is a hard book to read, I had to pause and take a breath and remind myself that she survived and she survived with such a spirit intact that you know that she is someone special!
The strength of Gayle to endure the pain, fear,treatments,crisis of medicine and humanity is superhuman in my estimate! The support and endurance and stubborn refusal to give up of her partner Jess, to believe,be present, and champion the needs and cause of her beloved is inspiring.
There were times i cried at what they all suffered, and other times i almost stood up and cheered at each step Gayle made towards healing!
This is a must for caretakers, it has much valuable information. Any health care professional should be required to read it, as it contains much insight on how to see your patient as more than a broken human that needs to be fixed and sent away,,,
Anyone that owns a body should read this book, it will inspire you to be grateful for the miracle that your healthy body is!!! I am grateful to Gayle and Jess and family, for generously sharing with us the intimate, spiritual,frustrating, tedious, painful and brave journey they have taken with such grace and strength.I am in awe of them both. well written, clear, informative and real.It is an inspiring and meaningful book, relevant and informative,,, and I thank them for sharing ,,,,,

On the way to their soccer game, Gayle Andrews and her son were hit by a truck driven by a sleepy teen returning from an overnight party, and there went all their plans for the next several years. The story of Gayle's arduous journey of healing, her painful efforts to be present for her frightened son, also badly injuried in the accident, her years of surgeries and rehab, and the life-affirming support of her partner, family and friends will inspire you and linger in your heart. A great reminder of how lucky we are, and what a blessing the bonds of love and community can be.

I really like how Gelvin approaches the Middle East

I really like how Gelvin approaches the Middle East. He has some very interesting views, and summarizes main events very neatly. Great writing style, easy to understand, easy to get through, great content and very entertaining as well as informative. Adapted to talk about the Arab Springs and their aftermath. Highly recommended.
