About the Author
David Meyers is a supervisor at Columbus State Community College and is the author of numerous local histories, as well as two musical and other works for the stage. David received his BA from Miami University and his MBA from the Ohio State University. He was featured in an episode of the Discovery Canada/A&E series "Curious and Unusual Deaths."

Elise Meyers Walker is an author and an administrator at the Ohio Board of Regents. She has co-authored six previous books with her father, David, and is frequently called upon to make presentations to various groups. Elise has appeared in an episode of the Discovery ID series "Tabloid." She received her BA from Hofstra University.

Columbus' Underbelly Laid Bare

After spending forty years of my life in Columbus, this book still managed to surprise and even shock me. Riots, bombings, gambling, prostitution, world-renowned corruption, and even serial "ripper." Yep, at certain times, the heart of Ohio was as black as coal and just as hard. I recommend this volume to anyone who wants to side step the usual tour down memory lane and get right to the nasty stuff.

Wicked Columbus inspires hometown pride

This page-turner by David Meyers and Elise Meyers Walker turned me on to a whole new genre of reading: non-fiction. Sympathetic yet unsentimental, they transform extensive research into characters who could star in novels and movies.

With newfound braggadocio, this book inspires me to tell friends and neighbors in New Jersey, “My hometown was once like freakin’ ‘Gangs of New York!’” The “Sopranos?” That’s HBO. We had Maurice Patrick Murnan. “House of Cards?” That’s Netflix. We had Harry M. Daugherty. Until reading this book, I thought “Badlands” was just a Bruce Springsteen song.

Thanks to this father-daughter duo, I have a newfound interest in history and sordid appreciation for the can-do attitude of those who helped shape Ohio’s state capital and influence the nation.

A truly incredible read

I finally got around to reading this book just recently; I wish I had read it when it came out in 1990. "Buzz" Bissinger pulls no punches in telling it like it is, how a high school football team can be the main rallying point of an otherwise isolated community, several hundred miles from the nearest large metropolitan area; a community whose residents are deeply religious, God-fearing, and shamelessly prejudiced and intolerant of non-whites.
I remember the controversy this book caused shortly after its release. Having read it, I now understand why: In a community where there's otherwise "nothing to do," a local high school football team can unite people of all races, incomes, cultures, etc. I should know: I used to live in Lubbock, not too far from Odessa; the townfolks share the same conservative beliefs and euphoric passion for football. Bissinger's metaphor-rich style of writing really made me feel as if I was back in West Texas. The similarity of the two cities was uncanny. I began to read in search of something startling and controversial; instead it brought back a lot of memories. As I learned, the people of Odessa and Lubbock are strikingly similar (except Lubbock also has collegiate football, from Texas Tech University, to root for, as well as a few local high schools). I found Bissinger's descriptions totally accurate, if not downright eerie.
In the end, I couldn't help but feel for the 17- and 18-year-olds who had to endure the pressure to produce one victory after another, and the supporters' shameless win-or-else attitude. Bissinger's ability to empathize with America's appetite and obsession for winning really drove home the point. When I finished reading it, I cried. This book was THAT soul-stirring.
To Stephanie, a Permian High School grad who wrote a review of this book in May 1998: I'd advise you to read "Turning The Page - '88 Permian team still can't escape glare of 'Friday Night Lights,'" by Dave Caldwell (The Dallas Morning News, November 24, 1999). You called Bissinger "a liar," but Jerrod McDougal, whose loud Bon Jovi music was mentioned in the introduction, said "The Book [as it's known in Odessa] painted a pretty ugly portrait of the town, but there's not a lie in it." And Randy Ham, a Permian grad who works at a bookstore in Odessa, mentioned, "It is a bitingly accurate portrayal of the town. It really is."
Mike Wallace, the "60 Minutes" correspondent, said that "'Friday Night Lights' reads like fiction; unhappily, it is fact." I feel that's all one needs to know to prepare for this truly incredible read.

Fantastic Story. Author With A Death Wish ?

In 1970, having won district and bi-district championships, my high school football team played the Odessa Permian Panthers for the regional crown -- and they creamed us. Most frightening was the crowd that came to Abilene from Odessa to watch the game. They wore solid black (Panther colors) and they were FANATICS. When the Panther band spelled "MOJO" on the field (I'd never encountered that term before) they went absolutely NUTS.
I finally understood the program a little better after reading Friday Night Lights, a terrific examination of the semi-pathological football infatuation in Odessa. And I can't believe the author would ever return there, if he valued his life, because he certainly did not paint a flattering picture. This book is WELL worth reading. Everyone who ever went to high school will glean something valuable from it.
Most touching and telling, I thought, was the scene at the end of the book, after the season had ended, wherein the coach took down the slips of paper showing the names of the seniors who were on the team that year, and unceremoniously dumped them into the trash can. That metaphorically demonstrated the entire town's ethos toward its high school football heroes. After they no longer played for the team, they were just plain trash like everyone else.

Simply one of the finest sports chronicles ever

When I first picked up this book, on my lunch break, I arbitrarily flipped to a page in the middle and started reading. I became so engrossed in it that I was late getting back to work from my lunch break. Such is the superb quality of writing that Bissinger brings to this book.
Friday Night Lights is about the Permian High School Panthers football team in the 1988 season. In Odessa, TX, they only "have two things - football and oil, and there ain't no more oil." Carried on the adolescent shoulders of the black-clad Panthers are the hopes, dreams, aspirations, and societal well-being of an entire community. The book focuses on the intense scrutiny and pressure placed on the players, coaches, and even families associated with the program. After a tough loss, the head coach can expect to have his house vandalized, his family verbally assaulted, and calls made for his firing. The student population of Permian is predominantly white, but the few black players imported from Odessa's poor, mostly black, south side are some of the team's most successful players. The book highlights the contrast in the white, wealthy suburban area Permian is located in against the older section of Odessa, populated mostly by blacks and Hispanics.
The book also profiles several of the team's star players. Some live for every single moment they can wear the Panthers uniform, while others are conflicted at having to play in such a pressure-cooker environment. Some are the lucky sons of Odessa's richest residents, bound for Ivy-League schools, while others come from painful poverty and broken homes. Odessa is portrayed as an entire city of broken dreams, devastated by the downturn in the oil industry where unemployment is high and crime higher. What holds the community together is the Friday Night Lights at Ratliff Stadium, where the Panthers do battle not only for team and school pride, but for the pride of an entire community and people. I cannot recommend this book more highly.

About the Author

Leslie Brubaker is Professor of Byzantine Art and Director of the Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies at the University of Birmingham, UK. She is the author of Vision and Meaning in Ninth-century Byzantium (1999), co-editor of Gender and the Transformation of the Roman World, 300-900 (2003) and Byzantium in the Iconoclast Era c. 680-850: a history (2011).

A shorter account of much larger research, but so pared down that many will go on to the larger book anyway

In 2011, the Byzantinist Leslie Brubaker in collaboration with John Haldon wrote an ample monograph that sought to challenge the conventional account of the debate over icons between circa 650 and 850. For readers who are daunted by the price of that Cambridge University Press hardcover and its length of nearly a thousand pages, Brubaker went on to write this book for Bristol Classical Press. At only 134 pages, much of which is taken up with maps, Further Reading lists or illustrations, this is an altogether more approachable book on the subject and a motivated reader can finish it in one setting.

The prevailing understanding of Byzantine iconoclasm is that it was instigated by Leo III, it was a period of massive destruction across the Byzantine world, that it greatly divided society, that it was a period of artistic stagnation, and that its fiercest opponents were monks and, possibly, women. Brubaker claims that every single one of these assumptions of incorrect. For example, she makes a case that the classic account of iconoclasm starting with the emperor Leo III removing the icon of Christ from the palace gate is fictitious. It was his successor Constantine V who got the ball rolling against icons, but his only action was to convene a council to discuss the matter, and there is no evidence of actual destruction of images. One ought to look past writings from decades after, which can be seen as politically motivated smear campaigns, and hold that instead of true iconoclasm, there was a much calmer "iconomachy".

Some of the findings announced to the general public here are interesting, but as someone with more than a passing interest in this subject, I'm not entirely content with the book. So many details were brought up but quickly passed over that I feel like I have to get the author's BYZANTIUM IN THE ICONOCLAST ERA anyway. Plus, writing for a Western and thus mainly Roman Catholic or Protestant audience, Brubaker seems unwilling to get into the specifics of Orthodox belief. However, Byzantine society was so defensive about Christological positions, and the icon controversy played into that, that those theological minutiae must indeed be delved into in order to give the reader a full account of the subject. Still, the long bibliographies and Further Reading lists provide at least some consolation for a reader wanting more.

This is the short, more accessible and more affordable version of the massive and scholarly two-volumes published a few years ago by John Haldon and Leslie Brubaker. The subject and purpose of this little book by Leslie Brubaker, released in 2012, are similar. It is explicitly targeted at the so-called “general reader” although it is written and structured in such a way that it more generally of use for any type of “beginner”, including first or second year undergraduates, with references listed and annotated at the end of each chapter, for instance.

The subject is the debate and controversy over icons in the Byzantine Empire between about 680 and 850 or “iconoclasm”, to use what the author shows to be a modern term that the contemporaries never used themselves. The purpose is to discuss, challenge and dispute what has become commonly held views, and to show to what extent these views are derived from and have been influenced by what the author has termed Byzantine spin. In other words, the author seeks to demonstrate that history has - once again – been largely rewritten by the victors or, at least, that it has been deliberately recast after the facts to fit political Byzantine agendas and serve particular interests. She also seeks to demonstrate

Specifically, the author seek to demonstrate that there is little evidence, and, in some cases, perhaps no real evidence that back a number of statements that have become “received knowledge.” These start with the view that Byzantine iconoclasm was instigated by Leo III, that it deeply divided society and lead to violent persecutions and that it was largely opposed by monks and women which were deeply - and supposedly more - attached to the worshiping of icons.

I will not explain the various arguments put forward here (and once again) to explain why all of these assumptions are incorrect. However, one of the main interests of this book is to show that the portrait that is shown of iconoclasm is essentially a very biased one. This is becomes it comes essentially from their enemies, with many of the iconoclast sources not having survived the struggle. It was largely (although not entirely and perhaps not quite as much as the author claims) developed after the end of the crisis. In particular, she demonstrates to what extent many of the holy lives of presumed “martyrs” of iconoclasm were written after the events and painted as victims of religious persecutions people which probably were also plotting to unseat the incumbent Emperor.

A related benefit is to show the essential ambiguities surrounding the different 6and not necessarily related) phases of the struggle over almost a century and a half. There was a religious dimension and it may not have been only or mainly about purity of dogma but about religious power and control over the faithful through intermediation. Icon worshiping could be viewed as dangerous to the extent that the worshiper could relate to God through the intercession of the Virgin Mary or the Saints and could bypass the ecclesiastical hierarchy. There also were some political dimensions, with Emperors taking sides and, perhaps even more so, being portrayed as taking sides and behaving as tyrants by their opponents.

While the lists of references and maps are rather good, I do however have one significant reservation with this book that has to do with its format. It is essentially too short to do justice to what is a much more complex topic than what is generally believed. It is too short to allow the author to present a fully developed – and therefore a fully convincing – case. Finally, it is perhaps also too short to allow the author to avoid the risks of simplification and exaggeration at times. Four stars.

What a terrible book. I am not one to throw rocks regarding grammar. But this book, has so many grammar errors and improper use of words that it is hard read and understand. The content is poor. It as though someone just copied and pasted a FAQ section. Honestly, you would be better off just listening to your neighbor than this book. There is absolutely no useful information in this book regarding trading penny stocks. Do not waste your money on this book. You would be better off searching the internet.

I can't put it down!

Anyone who reads this book will find that it is wonderful. I have only read a few chapters of if for a college course that I am taking, and am looking forward to reading more of it. The information included in the text was so easy to grasp and to remember. The author thinks about every little aspect concerning the issue and draws on it clearly so as to make sure that the reader understands each and every issue involved. This surely is a book for anyone who is interested in environmental issues and what causese those issues to come about and how much of an impact that we humans have on the planet.

The Environment and a Bit More...

This book was a required text for one of my courses. In the past I have not had the best experiences with texts that offer such broad overviews of topics, and as result, I was not looking forward to reading this book. However, I have found the book extremely well written with an abundance of references for additional reading and further research. Every chapter has inserts of up to date events that outline both the environmental and health effects of pollution on world populations. For example the chapter on "Water Pollution" (Ch. 15) at the same time that it identifies the many sources of water pollution it also provides the reader examples of water pollution on health; such as, describing in detail the how and why schistosomiasis infection rates have remained constant for the past 50 years affecting 250 million people globally. If you are interested on a well written introductory book on the environment and health, this is certainly a book to keep in mind.

Excellent book

Broad coverage of important topics in environmental health. Most important of all, it is very easy to read and grasp the points that the author is trying to make. It is comparatively much more readible than many other titles in the subject.
