About the Author
Tomas Petricek discovered functional programming as a graduate student at Charles University in Prague. He has been a Microsoft C# MVP since 2004 and is one of the most active members in the F# community. In addition to his work with F#, he has been using C# 3.0 in a functional way since the early previews in 2005. He interned with the F# team at Microsoft Research, and he has developed a client/server web framework for F# called F# WebTools. His articles on functional programming in .NET and various other topics can be found at his web site tomasp.net.

Jon Skeet is a Senior Software Engineer at Google, working in London. He has been involved in the C# community since 2002, initially in newsgroups, then through his blog, user groups, international conferences and the Stack Overflow Q&A site. Jon enjoys putting the language through its paces, finding new and interesting ways to use and abuse it.

a pragmatic approach to F#, especially for C# programmers

A hallmark of this book is a very pragmatic, Rosetta stone approach to F#.

Since F# lives in .Net, and .Net is inherently object-oriented; it makes sense to understand something of the mapping that takes place behind the scenes when F# code is mapped into the .Net world.

Many of the interesting new features introduced into C# are actually hand-me-downs from FP (functional programming). This includes generics, LINQ, anonymous methods, lambdas, type inference, etc.. Since many programmers need to use C# in the work-a-day world, it makes sense to understand the functional elements of C# by seeing them in a functional language like F#, where they can be seen in their purest (least hobbled) state. Once these concepts are understood, it is then much easier to understand how to wield these tools effectively in C#.

That said, there are also limits to how much functional programming can be done in C# (and how effectively it can be accomplished). This book clearly demarcates the boundaries of what is (and isn't) feasible in C# vis-à-vis functional programming.

One of the things I liked best about this book is the discussion on why functional programming makes code easier to read, write, and verify. This discussion does not appeal to what might be (for many) inaccessible theory (i.e. denotational semantics, category theory, etc.). Instead it is demonstrated in amazingly simple, straightforward ways! This discussion is very effective.

Another facet of this book's approach that I applaud is the demonstration of lambda calculus. Why would a practical book dabble in theory? There's actually a very pragmatic payoff in doing this: functional programming has a lot of underpinnings in lambda calculus. Those that have been exposed to lambda calculus will feel right at home in F#. Those that haven't are likely to feel more "culture shock" when being exposed to concepts like currying and lazy evaluation. Functional programming really does represent a substantially different way of thinking about computation.

This book also features an excellent discussion about design patterns; comparing and contrasting how they are implemented in OOP (object-oriented programming) versus FP. Some classic design patterns in OOP essentially come for free in FP (e.g. the "visitor" pattern).

Verbose and repetitive

The core content is fairly good, but it is ruined by the exposition: the same concepts are repeated multiple times in different places (e.g. fold operation, immutable data structures), and there is a ton of redundant verbiage (I don't know how else to call it) that obscures the actual information and makes the reading a slog.

An example of what I mean by 'verbiage' - on page 156:

....Let's now analyze how it works in some more detail.

6.4.3 Evaluating the example step by step
It can take some time to become confident with high-order functions like these,
especially when they are nested. We're going to examine how the code from the
previous listing by tracing how it runs for a few sample inputs. Moving from the
abstract question "What does this code do in the general case?" to the concrete
question of "What does this code do in this particular situation?" can often help
to clarify matter

This does not actually say anything - it just introduces what it's going to be written after - that you are going to read in any case. This is a page I opened at random - the book is full of this - constantly telling you what you just read and what you are going to read.

On top of this some more advanced stuff like continuations gets short (and not very illuminating) explanations - that is sort of galling in the middle of all this redundant stuff.

It could have been a good 200-300 pages book, instead it is a mediocre 500+ pages ones.

Excellent tutorial with a unique approach

I usually don't like tutorial-style books, but am finding this one invaluable. More than the other F# titles to date, it explores at length what makes functional programming different, and what this means in a .NET context. A unique feature is the running comparison of F# with both traditional and "functional style" C#. Code listings are nicely labeled with arrows pointing out important details. The book is not intended as a language reference, and only lightly touches on the imperative and object-oriented sides of F#, or contents of standard .NET libraries, but this allows a more leisurely and thorough treatment of the distinctively functional concepts and their implications for program design. Highly recommended.

Useful estate planning book and software

I originally wrote the following review for the Quicken WillMaker Plus 2007 software, which actually costs more than this book-CD-ROM bundle. This book-CD-ROM combo *DOES* include the full version of Quicken WillMaker Plus 2007; see my picture posted above. I highly recommend this book-CD bundle as it's both cheaper and more helpful. The book is a very good primer on the topic of estate planning.

Original review of the software, which mentions this Essentials kit:

I'm a fan of Nolo's Quicken Willmaker product. It helps you create your own estate planning documents as well as a few simple general legal documents. It's very easy to use, and works in all states (except Lousiana, where the estate planning documents created in this software won't be legal due to that state's specific drafting requirements).

There are a few things you should know, however, before purchasing the software.

First, Amazon also sells a book-CD version called Quicken Willmaker Estate Planning Essentials which combines a full book on estate planning with a full version of the Willmaker Plus software, and it sells for much less than the software alone! It's just a much better deal. Just search for "willmaker" in the Book section. (Note: the 2007 version, which is the one you *should* buy, is slated for release Oct. 30, according to the product page on Amazon.)

Second, the 2007 edition of the software gives you updates and tech support through the end of 2007. While you can create and modify and print and export documents created in Willmaker 2007 for as long as you own the software, you won't receive any updates beyond December 2007. If your state's estate planning law changes in January 2008, for instance, your will and other Willmaker-created documents *might* become outdated and no longer of legal value. Herein lies an interesting question, almost a catch-22: you bought this software to avoid the service of a lawyer, but in order to ascertain whether your documents will remain in legal force in the future, you may need to consult a lawyer! Of course, you can always opt to get the 2008 (and 2009 and 2010 and so on) versions. If Nolo continues to market the Estate Planning Essentials bundle for thirty bucks each year, you may still end up saving money upgrading each year rather going to a lawyer. (E.g., $30 a year times 30 years comes to less than $1000, cheaper than engaging a New York City or San Francisco lawyer for three hours!) My take: unless you live in a state that constantly alters its estate planning laws, you will probably be safe with just Willmaker 2007 and upgrade occasionally in the future, especially when your life situation experiences a big change. (For example, if you are married and, God forbid, divorce in 2011, you can skip editions 2008-2010 but do upgrade to the 2011 edition when you re-plan your estate.)

Third, while the software itself is easy to use with its step-by-step guide (and if you get the cheaper book version mentioned above, it's even better!), getting all the information you need about yourself (assets, beneficiaries, etc.) is actually quite a time-consuming process. Taht's why again I recommend the book-software bundle; it tells you what you need to do before running the software to write your will. Otherwise you'd be surprsied at how much prep work you'll actually have to do before finishing even a simple will!

One last thought: because this is self-help software, while many people will find it adequate, you may still want to talk to an estate attorney. For one thing, a legal will requires witnesses, and you might just as well pay your attorney and his assistant to act as your witnesses, if you don't want your friends or relatives to know what's in your will! For another, estate laws are getting more and more complicated, and vary by state, so a local attorney is still BY FAR the best and most reliable source and a competent attorney will provide invaluable services that no self-help software can offer. That said, I do recommend this excellent program (esp. the cheaper kit) for those obsessed with self-help and/or those looking to save money. (Yours truly belong to both types!) Besides, the Estate Planning Essential Kit, which I think is just GREAT, can educate you on the various topics in estate planning, so even if you choose to hire a lawyer, you'll talk smart and know what he or she is doing with your will and your trust.

(Again, Louisiana residents should seek an attorney's help. This software, or any other estate planning software I know of, won't work in your state.)

No adult with children or property is too young to start estate planning. However you choose to proceed, good luck!

Do yourself and your loved ones a favor. Make a will.

This product is great and I highly recommend it. I was years behind in updating my will. The attorney who did my first will had stopped practicing law and I was not sure who to call. On top of that, I knew it was going to be expensive. You do not need an attorney to do a simple will. Most people can do it themselves easily with Quicken Willmaker Plus. On the Amazon site, you will see 2 different products called Quicken Willmaker Plus. One is software and one is a book. Buy the book. The information there will help you with the process, and the same software is inserted inside the cover of the book. On top of that, the book is cheaper than the software alone. With Quicken Willmaker plus, I was able to create my own will. Plus, it is saved in an electronic format and I can easily change it or update it in the future. Keep in mind, there are some situations where you should seek an attorney's help: 1) If you have a disabled or handicapped child that you want to provide for. 2) If you have been through a divorce and are trying to protect your assets from individual(s). Those situations are complicated and it would be wise to seek professional counsel. For most people though, you can do this yourself and save a lot of money. Most of us have just been convinced that we need a professional. I highly recommend this product. I have a lot of peace of mind now that I know this is taken care of. Oh by the way, this software will help you with some other important documents besides the will. You can create a durable power of attorney and create end-of-life documents including a living will. You don't have to put this off any longer.

Meets expectations

Don't buy WillMaker toward the end of the year unless you are sure you will complete all your documents prior to the end of the year. Printing a document in 2008 with WillMaker2007 caused the software to produce a statement on the first page to the effect that I was using an out-of-date product and it may not comply with law. Of course, the updates from WillMaker cost more than purchasing WillMaker 2008 from Amazon.
WillMaker does a good job producing the required documents and is user-friendly. The will it produces has built-in obsolescence that is not necessary. (ie. If you are predeceased by your children, Willmaker allows only those grandchildren you have "named" to be contingent beneficiaries. This is fine unless a new grandchild is born after you've prepared your will, in which case you have to prepare a new will. This inconvenience could have been eliminated with the proper language by Willmaker, but they want you to have to purchase another year's version of the software.) Still, the software does the job and is cheaper than an attorney.

Everything you need to know -- just add trees!

This is the do-it-yourself book that got me started on that sweet rite of spring -- making my own maple syrup. The author's emphasis is on how to do it efficiently and very cheaply, using easy-to-find materials you can scrounge yourself. If you have the trees to tap, by all means get this book! (Hint: they don't have to be the sugar maple species. Try other maples as well. I get great syrup from box elders, which I considered "trash trees" until I learned they are in the maple family. Now I treasure them like gold.)

My own sugaring set-up is total simplicity: just some old refrigerator grates set on top of cinder blocks, heated with odd scraps of wood that fell from trees in our woods, or that others have thrown away at construction sites, etc. (Much better than having those go in the landfill!) The sap is boiled down in flat baking pans, then finished off on the stove inside. Except for the initial expense to buy some professional spiles for tapping (you can make those, too, but I'm a failure as a tinsmith) and the propane it takes to finish a batch, I have spent ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for the 3-4 gallons of syrup we make each year. Not a bad return for a book that I cost me less than ten bucks!

Great intro to ultra cheap sugaring!

This book has an overarching philosophy - keep it simple and keep it cheap! The authors describe everything you need to know and stress not having to pay for anything you can get for free. This quest for free stuff that works well is one of the pleasures of hobby sugaring. Well written descriptions of all the processes. Lots of photos. Reading it makes you wish the sap would start flowing NOW! Highly recommended

Excellent starter book.

I remember fondly the early Michigan spring from my childhood, helping my father collect sap. This more than anything fueled my desire to make my own syrup. This book, Rink Mann's "Backyard Sugarin'" is an excellent book to get you off without breaking your back or your bank account. The author has a delightful writing style that is thoroughly engrossing. The book is well illustrated, full of ideas and rock solid on exactly when, how and what to tap, and exactly how to process all that sap. I highly recomend this book. Even if you don't live in sugar country you will enjoy this book.
