The book is also about friendship born out of difficult circumstances, presented here through the character of Ahmed who risks his life to help his friend in the quest to find his father.Omar's journey is fictional; however, it describes real life in Palestine's Gaza Strip between 1981 and 2011. This period witnessed three major events that have shaped the current situation - the first Intifada, the Oslo Accords and the second Intifada. While politics provide an important background to the story, the novel does not aim to put forth any political arguments. Instead, it sheds light on what it is like for two young boys to lead an ordinary life in an extraordinary place often described as 'hell on earth.'

About the Author
Ahmed Masoud is a writer and director who grew up in Palestine and moved to the UK in 2002. His credits include Go to Gaza, Drink the Sea (London and Edinburgh 2009), Escape from Gaza (BBC Radio 4, 2011), Walaa, Loyalty (London 2014, funded by Arts Council England). Ahmed is the founder of Al Zaytouna Dance Theatre (2005) where he wrote and directed several productions in London, with subsequent European Tours. After finishing his PhD research, Ahmed published many journals and articles including a chapter in Britain and the Muslim World: A historical Perspective (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2011). An earlier version of Vanished won the Muslim Writers Awards (London 2011 supported by Penguin Books).

honestly a great thriller / mystery book

WOW JUST WOW, honestly a great thriller / mystery book, my favorite kind of books. Loved the book, its a gripping story, if I didn't have such a busy week I would have finished it all in one sitting. Of course some parts were painful to read , but it needs to be said. Every line meant something, and demanded my attention to details, did I mention I loved the book !!!
Highly recommend it.

Brilliantly written journey that takes you through almost every human emotion. This mystery thriller does not disappoint. The characters are colorful and believable. The story is of a son's search for his missing father, layered with circumstances that show the depth of the human will. I particular appreciated the vivid look into life under occupation in Gaza. A small glimpse of what many people only can imagine. A great book that shows how where we are born, where we travel to, and the people we choose to be a part of our lives play a huge role in shaping who we are. A wonder debut from Ahmed Masoud. I am looking forward to many more great books from him.

An extraordinary story of an extraordinary boy from Gaza

It took me 3 days only to finish Vanished by Ahmed Masoud. What an extraordinary journey ! I got hooked on chapter two and couldn't wait to finish the last ! So well written that I could visualise scenes in my head. A great read. Be prepared for book full of emotions, pride, anger & love but mostly about a person who never gives up or takes no for an answer !
