About the Author
Scott Remer had an amazing experience placing 4th in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in 2008 after making it to 34th in his first year of competition in 2007. He has always loved language, reading, and the power of the written and spoken word. After aging out of the NSB, he took it upon himself to write the most comprehensive guide to preparing for the Bee to help other champions succeed. He finished the book when he was in tenth grade, while taking such challenging subjects as AP Comparative Government and Mandarin Chinese. Scott lives in Beachwood, Ohio with his proud parents, his younger brother, Alex, and his cats, Kinsman and Tiberius. He enjoys participating and placing in essay contests and recently won a $10,000 grant to make his school district more environmentally sustainable. He is active in many extracurricular activities like Ecology Club, Debate, Science Olympiad, and Academic Challenge. He does not know where he wants to attend college, but knows he would like to volunteer at the National Spelling Bee and hopes to be a word panelist someday.

Spelling Observations Not Always on the Mark

I am writing this in the capacity of a child NSB participant, the 2004 Senior National Spelling Bee champion, coach of three NSB contestants who finished (in a tie for)3rd, 5th and 8th in the nation three of the past four years, and as university faculty who teaches Spanish and Portuguese: While this guide is an amazing accomplishment for its 16-year-old author and it contains many fun and useful facts and features for those preparing for high-level spelling competitions, this book is also fraught with problems. In his observations about German, all of the Romance languages, Latin and Greek, Remer makes many errors along with other spelling patterns that are correctly identified. He attempts to make observations about "minor" languages, for which there are not sufficient examples to generalize. He includes words from languages that have never and will probably never bee used in the NSB, such as Avestan (heard of it, anyone?) and Icelandic. The book also suffers from overkill, e.g. the hundreds of French examples --among many others--- thrown together in too few categories. In his effort to reach 10,000 words, the author resorts to including words that have two spellings or more (such as cacciatore, cinquedea and gremolata, pp. 69-69), strictly prohibited from use in the NSB. Finally, this work includes words that seem too strange and difficult (polyphloesboean [with two alternate spellings, no less] and Tehuantepecer) for even the final rounds of the NSB. This book is almost guaranteed to overwhelm almost any speller except for those who have competed in and placed high in previous NSBs. Though Scott Remer's product includes many helpful sections and details (it taught me how to do an advanced search in Merriam-Webster's [unabridged desktop] Dictionary, it takes spellers on a scary and bumpy ride, alternately steering them wrong and leaving them exhausted.

Extremely useful spelling bee resource!

I used many study resources in preparing for the Scripps National Spelling Bee. However, few were as helpful as Words of Wisdom. The book covers the entire spectrum of languages, from commonly used ones like Latin, Greek and French to lesser known ones like Maori and Tagalog. In addition, it includes eponyms, roots, language patterns, advice, and mini-quizzes along with the occasional fun fact or little-known saying. Words of Wisdom provided a great foundation for me to venture into the depths of the dictionary - there were literally thousands of words that I knew from reading it beforehand which I wouldn't have known otherwise. I recommend this book to anyone interested not just in preparing for the Scripps National Spelling Bee, but also in words and language patterns in general.

Very Useful Spelling Bee Resource

I finished tied 27th in the 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee and used this book to prepare for the Bee. It is very well thought out and structured, and it contains words from many esoteric languages. The observations and spelling rules for each language are great! I am using this book as a foundation to prepare for the 2012 National Spelling Bee.
