Very useful, only a one small issue...

These cards are an easy way to boost your SAT-specific vocabulary. The flashcard format allows for quick repetition, more than with books in my opinion. I only wish they had pronunciation keys next to the definitions. I recommend these cards along with "Verbal Advantage" and a pocket dictionary for a lasting vocabulary increase. Daily reading, however, is still your best bet for a lifelong and effective vocabulary. These cards are just tools to speed up the process.

Nice Study Tool for easy vocab

This set of cards can be very helpful if you are preparing for the SAT and your vocabulary bank needs more work. However, the effect of these study cards will vary greatly from person to person, as this set contains some words that are used in everyday language and I really would not consider them to be "SAT vocabulary". If you already have a very good knowledge of SAT vocabulary, then you should look elsewhere. If you need work and need to learn SAT vocabulary quick, buying this will give you an easy and effective tool to the understanding of the basic words found in the SAT. By no means will this completely prepare you for EVERY word you will see on the SAT however, and if that was your goal, then you should complement this with more vocab to study.

a very useful tool

I'm an SAT tutor, and I recommend this product for most of my students. It's helpful not just for the Sentence Completions, but for the whole Critical Reading section- many of these words show up in the long passages and the corresponding questions.

It's true that students could make their own flashcards, but very few students are diligent enough to do that. This box gives them a huge number of useful words to learn, and having a sturdy box and dividers is invaluable to keep things organized. It's priced very reasonably for the quality you get.

What keeps it from getting 5 stars? No pronunciation key for the words, and the definitions could be simpler.

Excellent intro to marketing in this industry

I've been using the first edition of this book as a text in my Marketing of Financial Services course and student feedback has been very positive. A common problem with industry-specific marketing texts is that they're really just Intro Marketing in disguise. The examples are made specific to the industry (be it tourism, services, sports, fashion... or financial services), but essentially it's old wine in new bottles. This textbook avoids this pitfall and covers a lot of content that you would not find in an Intro Marketing text, but that is highly relevant to the Financial Services industry. For instance, there is pretty decent coverage of Behavioral Decision Theory, and many of the chapters (e.g., pricing) contain content specific to different types of financial services. Another thing to like is that it's still at a nice readable length, and clearly written. Something that seems like a useful update to the first edition is the simulation exercise at the end of the book. I had a quick run-through to evaluate it and it seems quite suitable to spend about 3 hours of class time on it, which is nice to introduce some activity-based learning to the classroom. If I have to find something to quibble about, the visual format isn't as sexy as other texts (some of which have layouts resembling magazines nowadays). This is a very minor issue, however, and overall I highly recommend it.

Great book on finance marketing

Estelami, a Fordham professor, states the most obvious problem with marketing, which is that you can’t visualize every product. Take financial services for instance; there’s no way to get a photo of a stock, mutual fund, or pension. He advises the reader to include the combination of three factors, and they are monetary input, time, and risk. This can be used to compare two different pensions or insurance policies.
A chapter is devoted to the different kinds of financial services and the factors that influence consumer choice. He covers the usual bank accounts, certificates of deposit, and loans, then breaks them down into categories for the different kinds of loans. For life insurance, he goes through everything that the salesman must consider when marketing the policy. First off, there’s the risk factor, such as the customer’s lifestyle and health, and profession. Does he/she have a hazardous job? Are there any dangerous hobbies, such as skydiving? Second comes the financial input, which will be influenced by how much the customer can afford to pay. Finally there’s the time frame, regarding how long the customer needs the policy, and whether or not it will eventually pay back any annuities.
This book is for serious financial marketing, and anyone currently working as a stockbroker, mortgage broker, or insurance salesman needs to read this book. It will eliminate the time wasted on pitching, and allow you to focus on serious customers who really are interested.

The book provides a very thorough take on marketing in an industry that is seeing considerable change and public scrutiny today. It discusses marketing essentials and applications against the backdrop of evolving financials service instruments and the regulations that oversee them. Balancing these out are injections of the critical issues that may arise in realizing and executing the concepts and strategies. Bringing everything full circle - going back to the customer that is the crux of any industry - is given due emphasis and it is comforting to see these tied together so the text arrives at how best to serve the customers. It is very rare to find a marketing book that focuses solely on such a complex industry - and commendable that it is able to meet the challenge of remaining relevant today. A must read for students and practitioners alike!

I am an ESL teacher who bought this book for use in private lessons with a businessman who was in the USA temporarily. I was particularly attracted to the line on the front cover that says, "Enclosed cassettes let you hear business English as it is spoken in true-to-life situations." I consider that statement to be a flat-out lie. The cassette tapes have the most unnatural, scripted "conversations" that even my student recognized as being unnatural. As a way to be able to prepare oneself for business settings, the tapes are worth next to nothing.

I have given this book a generous rating of two stars because it does have some value for someone who can read well (the book has a lot of reading) and wants to familiarize themselves with some business terms in English, if all they've had is academic or regular classroom English.

This is designed as a self-learning book, so it doesn't work well in a tutoring or classroom situation. Unfortunately, business books that don't focus on business writing are scarce in ESL, so there isn't much to choose from, thus some English learners may find some value in this.

On the positive side, "Let's Speak Business English" is a concise phrasebook for the business English student. However, the language is often unnatural and the exercises provide very little practice for effectively learning the expressions.

We need this kind of stuff on CD and easy to use, for example: like American Accent Training. with track number in each CD we can do each exercise, again and again.

Very helpful book lots of great spiritual wisdom and guidance

I had for my brother who is going through a rough time in life, he is into spirituality but doesn't like to talk about it. This is a nice book because it isnt very pushy and doesn't force it's faith onto the reader. Chogyam Trungpa more talks about the human condition as a whole in a way we can all relate. Not like some other faiths that say this is good and this is bad, if you do this your good but if you do that you're bad. Which makes it easier for my brother to read and not put his defenses up.

Simple Words, Profound Changes

A clear, simple, straightforward read on how to develop a "centered life" perspective and why doing so can change everything. Trungpa Rinpoche was a visionary and meditation master who came to the west in the late 50's when China was cracking down on Tibet. "Shambhala" is the name he chose to communicate the 2,500 years of Tibetan Buddhist wisdom in a secular way to the west. It refers to the legendary enlightened civilization which adhered to the notions that each person possesses an inner "Buddha" or "loving, kind center" and through meditation practices, we each can live a True life in the present moment, release fears and serve others to create an enlightened society.

A Beautiful and Peaceful Read

my friend recommended this book to me, and I found it a peaceful read. Much of the path in this book, I live in my daily life, and I don't personally adhere to any one way. I enjoy being a solitary being. However, the concepts of love and being are beautiful. The explanations of the deeper sight of living this human life are well written and understandable. I'm glad I have this book. I have no doubt, that I will read it over and over through future times in my life.

Better than Jenney's and Wheelock's

By the end of high school I had completed five years of Latin courses, including AP Latin, using both the Jenney's (probably now obsolete) and the Wheelock's texts. There was a gap of nearly four years between my last Latin class in high school and my first Latin course in college, and that gap was long enough that I forgot nearly everything I had previously learned. The intro college course that I took was using this textbook for the first time, and I myself, my classmates, and my instructor were all very pleased with it.

Despite the complaints of some other reviewers, the grammar-based approach employed by this text is here executed almost flawlessly. Fundamental vocabulary and grammatical pinciples are provided in seamless order and are explained thoroughly. The workbook, of course, is an essential companion to the text--the two are sold as a pair for a reason. As with any inflected, grammar-based natural language, repetition in reading explanations and completing drills and exercises is essential. And it cannot be repeated too often that Latin was at one time a spoken language, thus repetition is a necessity. Having used other texts, I can say without hesitation that this text best provides a strong foundation for reading Latin literature at the intermediate and advanced levels.

A great updating of the grammatical approach

This is a thorough introduction to the classical Latin language. And I do mean thorough. Russell and Keller are to be commended for introducing the complexity of Latin without apology, but also without assuming prior knowledge. It is up to the instructor (or the self-taught student) how much should be required to learn, because it really is quite a lot, being modeled on the Greek and Latin Intensive courses.

The textbook is actually appropriate for three whole semesters, because of (1) its thoroughness, and (2) the readings. The reason this book is so long is the enormous number of readings all along, but especially from chapter 8 on (to 15). There are many pages, from prose and poetry, of various authors, all with glossed vocabulary (but not grammar, see below). This means that a Latin class can "slow down" in the second semester a bit and do a lot of reading. The last four chapters have "continuous readings" from four major authors (Cicero, Caesar, Sallust and Catullus, I think), that that can take up the end of the second semester and a lot of the third.

The workbook is truly great, as well. There are far more (twice as many, three times?) exercises as can be gone through, so there is flexibility. Some can be done in class at sight, some done for homework, and there will still be ones available for additional work one-on-one if needed. In addition, there are at least 75 drill sentences per chapter that carefully reinforce all the grammar, syntax and morphology from the chapter.

After teaching from this book for a semester, my main suggestions would be:

1. Add grammatical (in addition to the vocabulary) notes to the longer and continuous readings.

2. Offer, as an option, artificial Latin, perhaps in the form of a continuous story (cf. the "reading method") from the beginning. The nearly universal "complaint" from my students was the "drudgery" of nothing but disconnected "drill" sentences in the first semester. It isn't until chapter 7 or 8 (i.e. the second semester) that the readings at the end of each chapter become long enough to be "interesting."

Very helpful to my 10th grade Latin student

My son is in 3rd year Latin. He struggles every day in this class only able to pull C's. I purchased this book for him last week and since he's gotten it his grades have gone up a small bit so far. What I find wonderful, however, is that he is reading it every night. He wants to do well in this class and this book seems to be capturing his attention and helping him learn the basics again. He brought it into his teacher today and she highly recommended it to everyone in his class. Hopefully we'll see a B or two from now on! I'll keep you posted!
